Some College Advice

After a month in college, here's a few pieces of advice from present me to future me.1

  1. Go to the beach. It's a great place to throw rocks and gain some reassurance that everything is alright.
  2. Knock on other people's doors. See what they're up to! Perhaps even make a friend :)
  3. There is no speed limit (Derek Sivers). Go do whatever you want whenever you want and stop being restrained by other peoples' stupid mental models.
  4. Rest in Motion (Nate Soares). Rest is something you do, not something you achieve.
  5. Aggressively Ignore Bullshit (Ben Kuhn). Why should you do things you don't care about?
  6. Stay away from poker.2 It's addicting and you'll wonder why you spent all your time at that table instead of playing video games.
  7. Make art. It's the only way to release some of that mysticism trapped inside. For now, the recommended way to make art is by playing the piano.
  8. Sleep early. Better sleep => Better work. And you also do enjoy getting up early :)
  9. Read.
  10. Be. If nothing else, simply be - enjoy the wind and the sun and the clouds, meditate, think about the weirdness of it all. Because it'll soon be gone.

  1. The advice here was written for me. As such, it may or may not apply to you. Perhaps reverse all advice you hear.

  2. Unless you're playing against whales and know that you can consistently win money. Even so, do poker when you have nothing else you can do.
