Some Advice to Myself

Following my previous post where I gave advice to my middle school self, here's some quick advice (not necessarily 100% accurate) to myself currently (and to future me).

  1. Do less. The jack of all trades, despite being able to become a king of all trades will never be an ace. As such, I caution myself (and you, reader) for doing too much -- for taking on too many responsibilities, for being part of too many organizations, to the point when where I want to do something and inspiration strikes a lightning bolt, I can't act upon it because "I have homework" or "I have a club to run."1
  2. Go take a damn walk. Are you on that dopamine train? Are you scrolling or "doing nothing" or unfulfilled? Then follow these simple steps:
2a. Change into comfortable outside clothes.
2b. Go to the door, take your keys, and leave your phone.
    2c. Put on your shoes.
And that's it. You're done now. Just let your brain do the rest, and go outside and take a walk. Also, do this as many times as necessary.
  3. Worry about structure. What I mean by this is that it's not just the work you're doing, but how you're doing it, where you're doing it, how you're feeling, etc. If you're having a problem (like I am with senioritis where all I seem to want to do is play video games and relax), the key to solving it may be to just get better (learn more, practice more), but often, for these "unsolvable" problems, change either the environment (the physical space), the routine (e.g. add in a walk), or the timing (do it after dinner rather than late at night), and things will work out well.
  4. Be yourself. Don't compromise and subvert your morals, beliefs, and ideas; those are ultimately the things that make you, you.2

  1. If you don't know, my senior year (this year), I quit formally having any responsibilities in all school clubs besides robotics. Previously, I was the President of Chess Club, the VP of Programming Club, and the Secretary for Math Club.

  2. Or the Turiya as Dr. K claims. Either way, be and stay you.
