Notes on Whiplash
Some key quotes/notes from the book "Whiplash" (more for my remembrance):
>> "Meteorological uncertainty"
>> "Compasses over Maps" (ch 3 title) -- this related to something along the lines of 'Get people to do, rather than to follow' (in the same way that a compass implies a tool and the unknown whereas a map implies a fixed path to follow)
>>>> Standardized education (Common Core, CollegeBoard) may not be the way to really get kids learning (see Finland).
>>>> What is "play" while learning? How do we capture it? How do we capture lightning in a bottle best?
>> (ch 5) -- you don't get anywhere by following orders. Thus, disobedience (good disobedience) is better than compliance
>> (ch 6) -- practice > theory
>> (ch 7) -- cognitive diversity is important. and cognitive diversity is achieved from real diversity. which is why diversity is important.
Now that I'm in econ land, diversity is a positive externality -- the market may think it is unnecessary, but having a diverse team brings many hidden benefits (better problem solving, better environment, more creation) that aren't exposed on first glance.
>> (ch 8) -- resilience vs. strength -- stockpiling strength is now not the way to go in this fast world
